1.
If you lift my feet off this road High enough to curve the horizon I could see to the days up ahead And the road behind me I've chosen And also every path I didn't choose Spread backwards in time and forward into All our other futures If my words resist as I rise Laden with the language of these walls We will erase all the lines on the land And make it to archway by nightfall The bottom of the canyon, the water's clear And passing through the gate, the city appears Spreading to the sky
2.
My heart is made of lava My bones are brittle wood Gunpowder and kerosene Are flowing in my blood And standing in this room Your ghost floats through the door And I'm a pile of ashes on the floor I'm falling through the morning I'm drowning in this bed Echoes of the afternoon Are crashing in my head And all around this place You're sounding off the walls And all around my feet the ashes fall Poison in the flower Promise of an hour All I can devour and then gone And every time it rains I'm standing in this flood And boiling from the fire in my blood Hurricanes and sailors All our little failures Falling through the water as they run The bottom of the ocean With every new eruption Growing ever closer to the sun
3.
You can spiral higher You are always free Standing at this summit It's all down for me Turn the face the molten earth One step forward into fire Or turn, stumble back again We could be like strangers Or a pair of frozen eyes Staring out into the blizzard Walking blind Fly on down and take my hand Am I searching empty skies? Or blue and endless canopy of ice? I can't hear your voice at all Nothing echoes off this snow Blue skies above and orange sea below
